pH Differences of the Sexes

January 22, 2026 – Subtle pH differences of between men and women play an important role in human reproduction. Sperm travel within a slightly more alkaline fluid, which helps protect their viability, while the egg exists in a naturally more acidic environment. Although both environments remain close to the neutral pH of 7, this delicate balance is essential for reproductive survival.

In women, maintaining the proper vaginal pH is also critical for microbial health. A vaginal environment that becomes alkaline can disrupt the survival of beneficial bacteria, increasing susceptibility to Candida species overgrowth. This imbalance may result in symptoms such as itching, inflammation, pain, and abnormal discharge. Men also can suffer from the effects of Candida yeast infections.

However, it can be confusing in reading the research literature that Candida overgrowth also can occur in acidic pH environments. So restoring a good balance of Candida that grows naturally in our gut biome (or microbiome) as well as in other organs of the body, can take some time and effort.

Recurring Candida overgrowth (yeast infections) can happen over a span of weeks to months, even after using antibiotics, anti-fungal herbs, probiotic supplements, or either topical formations or supplements intended to restore acidity in the vaginal area (improving environment of benign bacteria against Candida). However, professional medical evaluation and laboratory testing are always recommended for accurate diagnosis and treatment. To monitor the stages of improvement in pH condition, one home test is to use pH testing strips shown in the photo above.

Additional factors that may contribute to recurring Candida overgrowths include chronic illness, mold exposure, stress and hormonal changes  associated with aging (e.g., skin in the vulva can become more susceptible to splitting due to having sex or intense exercises that open up the tissue and blood vessels to microbiome invasion).  (See related article: Cascading Immunity – AquaNew Blog)

Will Drinking Alkaline Water Cause a pH Change in My Vagina?

Unlikely. The gut has an acid bath of extremely low pH that both sanitizes and breaks down both the food and drink we consume.

In addition, the human body has intrinsic buffers that maintain optimum pH – part of its natural defense against acidic conditions of oxidative stress, premature aging and illness. Plus these buffers protect the neutral pH of our blood.

Watt-Ahh is not alkaline water since it is ultra-pure water. It has a neutral pH close to a neutral pH of 7, based on laboratory titration testing — a value similar to that of blood which is regulated by three buffer systems described in the next section below.

Bicarbonate, Phosphate and Protein Buffer Systems

A buffer is a molecule that helps stabilize pH by either binding hydrogen ions (to neutralize acids) or donating hydrogen ions (to neutralize alkaline conditions). The body relies on three major buffering systems:

Bicarbonate buffer system involves hydrogen ion transfers of molecules formed by combination of respiratory carbon dioxide and water in our blood.

Phosphate buffer system involves the breakdown of nucleic acid and phosphoprotein to yield phosphoric acid (hydrogen ion donor) or dihydrogen phosphate (binds hydrogen ion to reform phosphoric acid)

Protein buffer system involves the proteins or amino acids in blood that can also transfer hydrogen ions to maintain neutral pH.

The precise transfer of hydrogen ions within these systems is fundamental to sustaining life. This biochemical balance supports the unique reproductive environments of both sexes and underscores the body’s remarkable ability to self-regulate its own pH conditions.

Can Watt-Ahh Help in Restoring and Balancing a Healthy Gut Biome?

Yes. The active oxygen in Watt-Ahh can create more of an aerobic environment for healthy bacterial respiration and survival. Candida can persist in anaerobic (oxygen-free conditions) while healthy bacteria will diminish within the human gastrointestinal tract, causing a microbiome imbalance and possible overgrowth of Candida.
