November 15, 2024 — Today’s U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would not endorse the World’s first known medical manual or what is called the “Ebers Papyrus” that is over 3,500 years old. It is a collection of prescriptions for ailments interspersed with forklore, spells and incantations, some going back another 2,000 years. The papyrus scroll is over 20 meters long with hundreds of elaborate portents intended to remedy diseases effecting digestion, urination, skin, eyes, teeth and heart circulation. Interestingly, the advice is to leave certain cancer tumors alone. The FDA would have frowned on the medicinal ingredients involving every part of animals (e.g., fur, feathers, bones, and colons) and even human excrement. One organic recipe for a poultice to reduce topical inflammation included lotus, watermelon, cat’s dung, sweet beer and wine. To protect against everything, another such recipe was to cook in oil and wax a mixture of mint and “scrapings of a statue” (collect dirt, sweat and oils from the skin of athletes) and then take the substance for four days.
Although these recipes may seem outlandish, the Egyptians and their ancestors likely discovered fulvic acid from the decomposition of animals and plants in the soil, a compound used today as an anti-inflammatory and critical for the body to absorb of nutrients.
Additionally, the types of water used in the magic portions would fail the U.S. EPA Safe Drinking Water standards. In addition to beer, the favorite vehicle of the ancient Egyptians for remedies, the types of water also were used … “Plain Water, Well Water, Spring Water, Salt Water, Mineral Water, Cake Water, Linseed Water, Natron Water (containing sodium carbonate), Water-from-the-Bird-Pond, Water-from-the-Rain-of-the-Heavens, and – Water-in-which-the-Phallus-has-been Washed!” It makes one wonder if some of these treatments using unpure water were more toxic than the disease itself.
A bright side of the Ebers Papyrus is the numerous variety of plants identified that were used in some of the simpler remedies that may have provided some therapeutic benefits (or at least did not cause harm) such as garlic, mint, willow bark and caster bean. A list of herbal remedies in the Ebers Papyrus can be found at this link. Many of these herbs are used today for many ailments.
