Illegal to Offer Soda to Kids? How Much Beverage Regulation is Too Much?

Refreshing Brown Soda with IceHow far will a city go to prevent childhood obesity? Apparently, if you happen to live in Northern California, all the way to Davis City Council. The Council voted unanimously last week on a new ordinance that requires fast food and other restaurants to offer water or milk with kid’s meals instead of soda. The ordinance would go into affect Sept. 1st of this year, and restaurants who do not comply face fines starting at $100. What that means is you – as a parent – can still ask for soda (at least, for now); but don’t expect it to be offered to you.

This is just the beginning. On Monday, San Francisco lawmakers voted to advance laws targeting all sugary beverages. Soon, your favorite soda may come with a warning label explaining that sugary drinks may lead to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. Additionally, it may soon be illegal to advertise soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks on city property, and the new regulations will forbid city departments from buying sugar-sweetened beverages.

How far is too far? Do you agree with this level of government intervention when it comes to beverage regulation?  If your would like to share your opinion, leave a comment below.
