Ahh-Mazing “AHA!” Discovery for June 2017: 100% Brain Power

We are always intrigued with scientific discoveries on the amazing, functional capacities of the brain. After all, one of the pillars of AquaNew’s technology is natural energy (electrons) for smart brains.

In revisiting past AHA’s, one of the memorable ones is a discovery of the link between the brain and immune system (February 2016). Another recent discovery was the “hope circuit” on the chemical relationship inside the brain to aid in recovery from stress (February 2017). So, it was a no-brainer (yep, we are shameless with our puns) to select for this month … debunking the myth that we only use 10% of our brain.

In a recent article, Tarek Samad, Head of Neurodegeneration Research at Pfizer’s Kendall Square Research Site, said there is a misunderstanding on how the human brain (or any mammalian brain) works. His theory is that, depending upon the activity, we employ 100 percent of our brains. The basis for his theory which is supported by other scientists, includes:

  • High Energy Consumption to Run the Brain: Compared to the other organs in our body, our brain uses 20% of our body’s energy to function, even though it only accounts for 3% of our total body weight. Read More about the body’s energy allocation.
  • Plasticity of the Brain: This refers to changes in neural pathways as we continue to learn and store new information throughout our lives.
  • Multiple Active Areas of the Brain: Brain imaging shows specialized regions that control language, emotions, spatial perceptions and senses and all are simultaneously working and coordinating, even during a relatively simple task of drinking water.
  • No Isolated Brain Damage (within the “mythical 90% unworked region of the brain”): No single area of the brain can be damaged without affecting the rest of the brain’s functions.

In summary, Samad said, “The brain is a highly efficient organ with complex circuity, naturally making it impossible for 90 percent of it to be sitting idle.”

This Ahh-Mazing “AHA!” Discovery on the full cognitive employment of the brain relates to the research performed by Neurobiologist Tarex Samad, PhD and Pfizer’s research team.
