Muffling the Side Effects of Weight Loss Drugs –AHA! Detox Discovery for August 2024

July 20, 2024 – The era of “plop plog fizz fizz” jingles in commercials has surrendered to hit songs to sell the experience of taking a prescription drug. The side effects seem to be drowned out by the catchy music with lively and happy dancers. Couple of years ago, we posted a blog about a repetitive tv commercial on an injectable diabetes drug with its off-label weight loss promise. It imprinted into the brains of the viewers by using the popular song name “Magic”.  The lyrics of “It’s magic you know; Never believe it’s not so; It’s magic you know; Never believe it’s not so.” Since then, the prescription drug commercials have amp up into a spectacle of “flash-mob” dancers swinging to the beat of hit show tunes. Decades ago, such entertainment was the realm of prime-time tv shows with fun-jingled commercials on enjoyable food and beverages, cars and digestive aids (rarely if none prescription drug ads).

One of the side effects of losing weight can be loss of muscle mass and strength. One doctor told us he attended a recent medical conference and he learned about the steep trajectory of semaglutide or GLP-1 argonist drug usage in the growing segment of the population in the coming years. Their findings is the faster the weight loss, the greater the muscle loss.

Fat cells that move into the kidneys and bladder when someone is either on a rigorous “hack” diet or a GLP-1 drug can cause inflammation and pain. Fatigue can also be a side effect of rapid weight loss, possibly due to extreme changes in blood sugar levels. Rapid weight loss may cause someone to feel fatigue causing less inclination to exercise which is critical for both sustaining and rebuilding muscle strength.

Rebuilding Muscle Mass

It is the natural part of aging that muscle mass decreases over time, typically starting around age 30. Muscle strength is needed to perform all daily activities of standing, walking and sitting. Loss of muscle mass increases the risk of falls and injuries.

It is not too late to start a daily routine of muscle-resistance exercise. Good nutrition is important too. What is paramount is full hydration of fascia needed for both muscle and joint movement. Good hydration should also be part of the protocol for preserving muscle strength.

The GPL-1 drugs that accelerate weight loss may not be identified as typical toxins but they are strong chemicals that can cause toxin-like side effects. Be careful and do not get carried away with the song-and-dance commercials.
